Title

Hot Plants

Problem Scenario

Broad Question

What is the best temperature water to give a plant?

Specific Question

Does the temperature of the water you give to a plant affect it's growth?

Hypothesis

I hypothesis that the cold water will make the plant grow more.

Variables

Independent Variable:

Water Temperature

Dependent Variable:

Plant Growth

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

Soil type ,Water type,Amount of water,Size of container

General Plan

I am going to conduct this protect at home. The plant I am going to be growing is winter rye.I am going to water the plants every other day. I am also going to measure my plants every other day.

Potential Problems And Solutions

The plants get under watered. Give the plants more water.
The plants get over watered. Give the plants less water.

Detailed Procedure

1. Put winter rye seeds in a seed starter kit with 75ml of jiffy planting soil.
2. Water with 10 millimeter of water on the first day and then for the rest of experiment
water with 6 millameter
the seeds every other day
3. You have to have six plants, two will be watered with 40 degrees C water ,another two plants will be watered with 20 degrees C water and the finale two plants will be watered with 10 degrees C water.
4.Measure how high the plants grow every other day in Centimeters.

Results

On the first two times I watered my plants there was no plant growth. On the third time I watered there was a no growth on the the first, third and fifth plants. There was a little growth on the second, fourth and sixth plants. On the the final day I watered there was alot more growth than on the third day I watered there was also some growth on the first and fifth plants.

Conclusion

My final conclusion is that the plant I watered with forty Celsius degree water grew the most. My Hypothesis was wrong, I thought that the colder water would make the plants grow more but it is the opposite. The hot water makes the plants grow more than the cold. So my hypothesis was totally wrong. So yes, the water temperature affects how much plants grow.

Discussion

During my research I did find the answer to my Specific Question. A pattern that I observed During my experiment is that the plant I watered with 10 degree C water did not grow as much as the plant that watered with 20 degree C water ,and that plant did not grow as much as the plant that was watered with 40 degree C water. My experiment did not have any problems. My experiment could be improved by adding more plants and having my plants grow for a longer time.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

The Benefit to the community is that if a scientist needed to grow a plant fast so he or she could harvest it that they could use hot water so the plant will grow fast. This would help people grow food or medicine fast so they could get it to who every needs it fast.

Background Research

Plants need many things to start growing. Plants need oxygen, water, light and a tempter around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.Plants grow and get food in two ways one is photosynthesis and the other is called respiration. These ways make food for the plant so it can grow. The plant starts off as a seed and then slowly becomes a seedling. The seed is protected by the seed coat. Inside the seed is a thing called an embryo. The embryo turns into the plant. For a few days, the embryo feed off the food supply in the seed.
After a while, the embryo turns into a seedling, and grows roots. Most plants need water and sunlight to grow. Deep sea plants that live on the ocean floor have no sunlight, but plenty of water. They get their energy from minerals and nutrients in the water instead of from sunlight. On land, plants also need oxygen and carbon dioxide. In order for plants to grow, they must send out seeds so that when the old plants die, new ones will be ready to grow and multiply. A plants needs to be in the right area of the world so it can grow. It needs the right temperature and have the right amount of rainfall. Plants may adapt to a change in climate if they need to.

Abstract

The first thing I did was measured the soil out that I needed to grow my plants. Then I planted some seeds right under the surface of the dirt. After that I watered my plants with 10 millimeters of water. Then I left my plants to grow for a day. After that I watered my plants with 6 millimeters of water and measured my plants and there was no growth. On the second to last day I watered my plants with 6 millimeters of and I measured the growth of my plants, there was a little growth on the 2,4,6 plants. On the final day I watered my plants and measured my plants, There was more growth on the 2,4,6 plants and there was some growth on plant 1.
